Imagine our ignorant ancestors gazing towards the heavens and contemplating the mystery of its nature; and imagine them recognizing the universe as we understand it today. Imagine them being blessed with the realization that we live on a speck of cosmic dust in a vast universe that supports billions of worlds just like our own.

Would they still claim that mankind is the main creation in the universe?

Would they still enforce their own nature upon the heavens?

Would they still surrender their will to the gods?

What stories would they tell their children?

The subject of practical religion rarely comes up in mixed company, and usually in regards to homosexuality (at least in my conservative corner of the world). This is an important topic, and I feel like we should be looking for common ground; at least with a few people.

The problem (as I see it) is not whether you believe or you don’t (I don’t) but what you do with it.

If you believe, and are of the opinion that you belief secures you some sort of eternal reward, no matter what kind of an asshole you are, then we’re not going to get along.

If you don’t believe, and that means you can be an ass because there are no consequences then we’re not going to get along.

If you believe, and think that you should love your neighbor as yourself, then we can be friends.

If you don’t believe and think this is your one and only chance to make the world better, then you and I agree.

I don’t care what you believe in, magical sky wizards, flying spaghetti monsters, whatever.

And I think it’s shit that society says polite people don’t discuss such things in mixed company. If we’re ever going to learn from each other we’ve got to have a chance talk things out and not just when it’s a matter of who’s fucking who.
